Diocese of Winona-Rochester
The Diocese of Winona-Rochester was established on November 26, 1889 when Pope Leo XIII issued the apostolic constitution which erected the diocese, and set its geographical boundaries. The diocese encompasses the 20 southernmost counties of the state of Minnesota and measures 12,282 square miles of some of the Lord's most beautiful country--bordered by the Mississippi River to the east and the Dakotas to the west. The diocese includes Blue Earth, Cottonwood, Dodge, Faribault, Fillmore, Freeborn, Houston, Jackson, Martin, Mower, Murray, Nobles, Olmsted, Pipestone, Rock, Steele, Wabasha, Waseca, Watonwan, and Winona Counties.
The diocese is home to 107 parishes, four high schools, 30 junior high, elementary or preschools, and Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Winona.
Missionary discipleship is following Jesus Christ in and through His Church to share the gospel message with our family and our neighbors, to the ends of the earth.
“I am overjoyed and humbled to receive this new assignment as the ninth bishop of Winona-Rochester. I look forward immensely to getting to know the good people, priests, and pastoral ministers of the diocese. I will have to brush off my Chicago winter coat, which has remained unused for the past six years in Santa Barbara! My fondest hope is that I might be a good spiritual father to all the Catholics of southern Minnesota.”
"Therefore, as the Shepherd of the Diocese, I propose two matters for consideration, which I felt were of paramount importance to the flourshing of our local church. These were evangelization (getting more people in our pews) and vocations (getting more priests at the altar)."
The Diocese of Winona-Rochester is headquartered at The Chancery in Rochester. There are 106 Catholic parishes throughout the Diocese of Winona-Rochester. If you are traveling or relocating to southern Minnesota, please use our Find-A-Parish application to locate a parish to attend Mass.

Open Hearts; A Young women's Discernment Day co-sponsored by the Diocese of Winona- Rochester; St. Mary's University of Minnesota and St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center in Mankato and Lourdes High School, Rochester. Mark your calendars for March 21, 2026. An open invitation to all young women ages 14-35 to listen for God speaking to the heart. He is calling...take time to listen.
To be precise, a man only “knows” he is called when he is ordained! However, there are many positive signs that can point to a vocation, and which can help a man make the decision to enter the seminary and continue along the path towards the priesthood.
Whether you are discerning a vocation to marriage, priesthood, permanent diaconate, consecrated virginity lived in the world, or consecrated life as a religious priest, brother or sister, the Vocations Office is here to support you.
